Mermaid Hair Spray DIY with Essential Oils for Strong, Healthy Hair

Having shiny, long, and healthy mermaid hair without the use of a bunch of different chemicals sounded too good to be true to me. As someone who has high maintenance thick, curly hair, I’ve been using heavy amounts of hair products for as long as I can remember. Willing to do absolutely anything and everything to prevent frizz, I would end up using 5-6 different hair products just to achieve the look that I wanted.

So you best believe I was very skeptical when I first found out about a DIY that only uses 4 ingredients. But within a few uses, I noticed my hair was shinier, and just looked overall a lot healthier. Since then, I’ve been using solely the mermaid hair spray and some coconut oil in my hair for about a year now. My hair seems to be growing faster than it ever has, as well as being hydrated and glowy. It’s crazy to me that I spent so long spending way more money and exposing myself to so many chemicals when all I needed to heal my hair and help it thrive was the power of plants.

Humans evolved alongside plants and our ancestors have been utilizing their healing properties for thousands of years. Essential oils provide numerous benefits naturally, without the need for harmful chemicals. This fun, easy DIY is for anyone who has hair. Bonus: it’ll also make you a walking diffuser.

The Power of Essential Oils

This lovely DIY is made with 3 powerful hair support oils- Rosemary, Cedarwood, and Lavender. These oils are a powerhouse for supporting a healthy scalp and hair, while also promoting thickness and growth.

  • Rosemary – Rosemary promotes hair thickness and growth with its ability to enhance cellular generation.
  • Cedarwood – Cedarwood can help balance oil-producing glands in the scalp, resulting in hair growth and the reduction of hair loss.
  • Lavender – Lavender is known to increase hair growth with its natural ability to generate the growth of cells and reduce stress. This oil has antimicrobial and antibacterial properties as well.

Other hair luvin’ oils you could also add:

  • Citronella – I add this oil to most of my mermaid hair sprays as a natural detangler.
  • Peppermint – The cooling sensation you feel from peppermint is increasing the circulation of the area it’s applied to.
  • Lemongrass – Lemongrass is known to be powerful against dandruff.
  • Thyme – Thyme stimulates hair growth.
  • Clary Sage – This oil increases hair strength and growth.
  • Tea Tree – Tea tree oil has antimicrobial and antibacterial properties. It can also increase hair growth.
  • Ylang-ylang – This lovely smelling essential oil stimulates sebum production, which can help with dry scalps.
  • Geranium – Geranium retains oil balance and is great for dry or oily hair. It also has regenerative properties.
  • Wintergreen – This oil stimulates circulation and helps with a dry scalp.
  • Patchouli – Patchouli is great for dry hair and dandruff.
  • Chamomile – This soothing oil makes your hair soft and shiny.
  • Bergamot – Bergamot has antimicrobial properties. May also help stimulate hair growth.

Why Low Tox Diys are Important

Our bodies are exposed to far more toxins on a daily basis than we’re able to process. As a result, many suffer from unexplainable symptoms. Reducing our toxin load whenever possible is essential for overall wellness. DIY’s like this one make it easy and cost-effective to go low tox!

Why Young Living

Unfortunately, the essential oil industry is highly unregulated, so it’s important to do your research when it comes to using them. The law doesn’t require FDA approval for oils to be sold so that means you could essentially be buying… well anything. Not all essential oils are made equally. Companies can claim to be “organic” and “pure” without ever having to prove a thing. Some companies add fillers that dilute the oil so much that the therapeutic benefits are no longer present. Some even contain synthetic fragrances.

Through my own research, I have found only one company that I felt I could trust and that was Young Living. Their seed to seal commitment ensures the highest quality essential oil possible. Their distilling process is unmatched, they have third-party testing, and the best part is not a single pesticide is ever used in the process (they have an even higher standard than USDA Organic Certification).
